Performing Arts Health – Development and analysis of risk profiles and predictive models using artificial intelligence
A new approach to health for musicians
Musicians are high-performance athletes—but many suffer from painful musculoskeletal disorders that jeopardize their careers. Why do these conditions arise—and how can they be specifically prevented and treated? This is where the PA.H|LIFETIME.ai research project comes in.
Artificial intelligence is used to analyze health data in order to identify risk factors at an early stage. The goal: tailor-made physical therapy for musicians—similar to sports physical therapy. In the long term, the aim is to establish an international center of excellence that combines research and practice and establishes a new physical therapy discipline for performing artists.
This way, we are laying the foundation for healthy music-making – for a lifetime.

On March 19, 2025, the partner universities (HSOS and HMTMH) of the PA.H|LIFETIME.ai project came together for the first time in a large group for the official kick-off meeting, which took place on the Caprivi Campus in Osnabrück. In addition to coordinating the overall project goals, the meeting also served as an opportunity for the participants to get to know each other and to discuss the specific goals of the individual working groups. The on-site exchange provided fresh impulses and strengthened cooperation—an important milestone for the project!
The DFG has selected the research project of Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences, in collaboration with the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), the University of Music, Drama and Media Hannover (HMTMH), and the University of Sydney, Australia, as one of the first projects at universities of applied sciences to receive funding. The objectives are to improve the health of professional musicians and to establish the new global discipline of music physiotherapy.
To the press release from Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences dated December 11, 2023
The project “PA.H|LIFETIME.ai – Health of Performing Artists – Development and Analysis of Risk Profiles and Predictive Models Using Artificial Intelligence” is one of a total of ten research initiatives funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) at universities of applied sciences and technical colleges.
